The Kermodei (pronounced Ker-mo-dee) is unique a sub-species of the black bear family. The Kermodei (Urus Americanus Kermodei) is named after Dr. Francis Kermodei who recognized the recessive gene that gives the bear its unique characteristics. The Kermodei ranges in colour from dusty white to reddish-orange. Their colouring is the result of a recessive gene; this means black females can have white cubs, and the other way around, too.

Fishing for Sockeye is best done with a fly rod.

What to bring for your visit
Generally, we have enough casting rods/reels for our guests.  We even have neoprene waders, so if  you don't have your own or prefer not to pack them, check with us that the sizes we have available will fit you.

If you wish to bring your own gear, when fishing for Chinook, bring an Ambassadeur 7000 series reel loaded with 30# line and a 10 1/2 - 11 foot rod.

For Coho or Steelhead, Ambassadeur 5500 or 6500 series reels with 10-12# line, and 8 - 9 foot rods, are more than adequate.

Most anglers fish for Sockeye with fly rods.  If you prefer to fly fish, you need to bring your own gear.

There are various competitively priced shops in the area where all of the appropriate gear may be conveniently purchased.

In terms of clothing, bring some light-weight clothes, a heavier layer, and rain gear.  Laundry facilities are available for our guests.
